Hi friend,
Tomorrow, Stone’s Throw Yoga turns five, and we’ve been reflecting on the wild journey that led us to this special day.
Our story began in 2019, with a friend sending us a link to the for sale listing of the old Freemason’s Lodge in Mundaring. “This would make a great yoga studio,” she said. “Why don’t we all go and have a look at it?”
JB and I had talked about opening a yoga studio, but not for a few years at least. But when we saw this beautiful (and rugged!) 90-something year old building, she took our breath away. We jumped in head first.
The timing was… not amazing. When we got the keys to the property, our wedding was only three months away. We had to renovate the building, create and market a new business, and plan a wedding all at once, while both working at our regular jobs. Despite all this, excitement built in the community and we confidently announced we’d be opening in January 2020.
We had absolutely no right to be so confident, and ended up opening on January 31st so we could (just) keep our promise 🤣
Our timing continued to be questionable, with the Covid pandemic seeing us closing our doors seven weeks later to the day. The following couple of years were an extremely stressful blur while we balanced keeping our business alive while keeping our students safe. We learned how to be flexible in a very different way than we were used to as yoga teachers, and also how to set boundaries when people thought it was okay to be rude or abuse us.
Some good things came out of that time, too. Our Zoom hybrid classes were born as an option for students who couldn’t or preferred not to practice indoors with others. Now, they’re a flexible option so our students can work their practice into their busy schedules when coming to the studio isn’t a possibility.
As we emerged from the worst of the pandemic, it was a joy to come together again. We hosted our first local and international retreats, and our membership base continued to grow.
It’s hard to believe that there are now over 350 individuals who walk through our doors every month to embrace mindfulness, movement and community. We’ve formed so many wonderful friendships, and watched our members connect with others in the community.
We’ve nurtured a team of incredible teachers – some who have been with us since day one – and prioritised giving them a supportive working environment with good remuneration and benefits (something that is sadly lacking in our industry).
And most importantly, we’ve impacted positively on hundreds of people’s lives. It’s incredibly humbling to have been told, by more than one person, that if Stone’s Throw Yoga didn’t exist, they probably wouldn’t either.
If you’ve been part of our story over the last five years, whether it was for a single class or five years of continuous membership, we want you to know just how much we appreciate you. Thank you, from the bottom of our hearts.
And if we haven’t yet connected, we hope to welcome you into our space with open arms soon.
Here’s to the next five years together, friends.
With love and gratitude,
Mel & JB
